Ayahuasca

The long night, held carefully

A brew of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and chacruna leaf, used for centuries across the Amazon basin, and worked with here in small guided ceremonies during the integration phase.

What it is

Ayahuasca combines the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, which contains MAO-inhibiting harmala alkaloids, with a DMT-containing leaf — most often chacruna. The vine allows the DMT to remain orally active, producing an experience that unfolds over four to six hours rather than minutes.

It has been used ceremonially by Amazonian peoples for generations, and is increasingly studied for treatment-resistant depression and post-traumatic stress.

What a ceremony involves

Ceremonies are held at night, in a small group, with a facilitator present from the first cup until morning. Purging is common and is understood as part of the process. The experience is often visual, emotional, and memory-laden.

A dieta — a simplified diet free of certain foods, alcohol, and specific medications — is followed for several days beforehand for safety as much as tradition.

What it tends to be useful for

Where ibogaine interrupts the physiology of dependency, ayahuasca more often works on what sits underneath it: grief, trauma, and long-avoided material. Guests frequently describe returning with something they can finally name.
